Castles, fortresses, walled villages, fortified cities and towers. The heritage of national fortified architecture is immense and varied. It is a very important component of the cultural heritage of our country, second only to religious architecture. Since 1964, the year of birth of the Italian Institute of Castles, enormous progress has been made in the field of protection and enhancement of the castellan architecture and part of this is also due to the work of cultural and scientific promotion that increasingly intensified during the years the Institute has played throughout the national territory. The cataloging of all the defensive works, the castellan itineraries, the award for students who graduate with a thesis on fortified architecture, the school competition "The castles ... tell", the National Castles Days are just some of the initiatives that 'Institute annually develops.
On the occasion of the 20th edition of the National Castles Days, which will take place this year on May 19 and 20, castles usually closed to visit will be open throughout Italy, round tables will be held, exhibitions and debates for the enhancement of the immense heritage castellano of our country.
